"At David Rug & Art Studio a varied series of oils by James Brady celebrate golf and women, although they aren’t combined; the golfers being male, the larger portraits female. Brady is an accomplished and prolific artist who has worked on film and video in Hollywood, although he’s now a Philadelphian. The most interesting in his golf collection is piece called The Swing, oil on canvas, which portrays just what it says—a golfer picking up his ball, turning, and then swinging. The scene is shown in a series of superimposed multiple movements, like a very slow-motion film. Horizontal composition, the action takes place against a backdrop of spectators sketched in heavy brush strokes; a brilliant green foreground, almost neon oranges and browns, a thoroughly theatrical composition.
Brady’s larger female portraits are bright and traditional; his Pensive, oil on canvas, shows a woman perched on a pale yellow couch, hands and feet bare, strong features, muscular neck and shoulders. Her face is non-expressive, almost a caricature, her flowered blouse gleams against the sallow couch. Her hands are experienced, nervous, ready to jump; her feet are solid; conveyed in firm, forceful brush strokes and slashes. Interestingly, the couch is also portrayed in some detail, so that it almost becomes an entity—a silent companion to the woman. Together they have been paired into an edgy partnership."
